Last week, the Ellison Chair Advisory Committee, led by Dr. Charlie Hall of Texas A&M University, convened in College Station, TX, to further discussions on the long-term Plants, Nature, and Health Initiative, which was introduced last year. Over 20 speakers contributed, emphasizing the crucial role that plants and nature play in recovery settings, hospitals, child development, and inspiring future careers in the green industry.

The committee had the unique opportunity to meet with Grammy-nominated musician Lynn Vartan, Associate Professor of Music-Percussion at the College of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts. Vartan, collaborating with other Texas A&M experts, is exploring how music and dance can be incorporated into garden spaces to enhance both human experiences and plant growth.

The committee aims to apply this research to the Texas Green Industry, helping businesses develop long-term strategies to meet the growing demand for stress relief and recovery through nature.

TNLA Staff, Kim Cabrera- TNLA’s Membership & Marketing Manager sat down with Jerry Maldonado with Maldonado Nursery & Landscaping to talk about industry Success and his advice to Hispanic Entrepreneurs wanting to get into the landscaping industry.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about how you got started in the landscaping industry?

Jerry:
My father had a nursery and landscape company with his brothers. When they went their separate ways, he started a business with me and my two brothers after high school. His mantra was, “Don’t work to make someone else rich—work for yourself.”

Q: What challenges did you face when starting your business?

Jerry:
We were just kids with little experience and no money. We started by doing odd jobs and slowly learned. Attending TNLA and NALP conventions helped, but there were many tough days. Luckily, our father didn’t let us quit. His humble dream was for my brothers and me to each have our own crews, and now we’ve achieved that and more.

Q: How has your cultural background influenced your approach to leadership?

Jerry:
At first, it was a hindrance. My father’s strict, hands-on management approach limited growth. Over time, through education and personal development, we shifted to a more employee-centric model. Now, our people are the key to our success. We still rely on some of my father’s lessons, but we’ve evolved as a company.

Q: What role has the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association (TNLA) played in your success?

TNLA has been a tremendous resource. We’ve attended conventions and classes and received certifications that helped us build a stronger company. Associations like TNLA are essential for new and growing businesses. Education and networking opportunities have been crucial to our journey.

Q: What advice would you give to other Hispanic entrepreneurs?

Jerry:
Count the costs! Starting a business requires time, patience, hard work, and sacrifice. If you’re unwilling to put in the effort, stay in your current job. Entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone, but for those willing to work, it’s incredibly rewarding.

Q: How can the industry better support diversity and inclusion for Hispanic business owner?

Jerry:
The focus should be on supporting frontline workers, most of whom are Hispanic. Providing more training in Spanish and leadership courses can help them advance into leadership roles and grow their careers within the industry.

Despite my father's elementary education and my brothers and me having only a high school education, we’ve built an organization of over 600 professionals driven by a passion for creating something meaningful. On September 24th, TNLA hosted a full-day Water Summit in Pflugerville, Texas, addressing the state's pressing water challenges. The event brought together a diverse group of TNLA members, including growers, garden centers, landscapers, irrigators, and academics, all united to tackle Texas' water crisis.

The summit started with presentations from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and community garden experts. They shared insights on cutting-edge irrigation technologies, best management practices, soil health innovations, turfgrass management, and sustainable landscaping using water-efficient plants.

​At lunch, Texas Senator Charles Perry (R-Lubbock), Chair of the Senate Water, Agriculture, and Rural Affairs Committee, spoke about his upcoming state water plan for the 89th Legislative Session. His proposal includes using $5 billion from the Economic Stabilization Fund to develop new water sources, plus an additional $1 billion annually for future water projects. Potential solutions include brackish and ocean desalination and possibly purchasing water from other states. These measures are critical as Texas faces a projected 73% population growth by 2070, alongside an 18% decline in current water supplies.

​In the afternoon, attendees broke into small groups to discuss state water restrictions and water-saving strategies. The TNLA board will review the ideas generated for future initiatives.

​We sincerely thank all participants for their contributions to this vital conversation. Their engagement was crucial in shaping the summit’s discussions, and TNLA remains dedicated to finding innovative solutions to safeguard Texas' water resources.
